The trading situation in Nicaragua is different from the rest of the origins. Here there isn't a big differentiation between commodity or speciality coffee when it comes to using that as a way to bargain for better prices. The New York prices are taken as the basis for any negotiation by the buyers and direct trade is not so scarce. The farmers we work with find a lot of value in direct trade since they can use this means to establish themsleves and their identity which is very important to them. They put a lot of effort into producing high quality coffee and to have a direct relationship makes this experience worth it. Since with direct trade, they can directly talk to the buyers and fix a price, it allows them to pay more to their workers at the land as well. This is especially beneficial since they see a lot of labor migration due to poor wages and lack of good working conditions on the farm. Being able to earn a higher income not only benefits the farmers but also has a direct impact on their community.
