80% of the community grows coffee in this region and it is the main income for farmers in this community. Even though crops like tomato is widely grown but it is not easily climate resilient but with coffee can be made to adapt into becoming more resilient and therefore is a crop that's widespread in Rutabo. Farmers get paid a competitive premium for bringing the coffees to Abakundakawa washing stations. This premium is sometimes to plant new coffee crops and also get the youth more involved in farming by distributing cattle to rear . As a community, it is rather cheaper to do certain processing and maintenance than individually. Therefore, the income is spent on education at household level, building better houses at community level and keeping their lands to themselves at a contextual level. The community has also been focusing on saving water and energy whilst keeping the quality of coffee in tact. More farmers are interested to improve productivity and stick to coffee if there is a guarantee of a contract. In a study we did for writing a proposal for the Social Sustainability Fund, we found some interesting evidence regarding land size and income for 172 farmer families.32% of the farmers have only between ¼- ½ hectare of land and 27.9% of them have less than ¼ hectare of land and only 10.5% have more than 1 hectare of land. 30% of them have been working with Abakundakawa between 5-10 years and close to 36% for more than 10 years. The average yearly income for 64 % of farmers was between 100 k- 500 k Rwandan Francs which in exchange rate on February 2024 translates to 78-400 USD yearly. The poverty line in Rwanda was set at around 159,375 RWF per adult equivalent in a year as per the World Bank, and we can clearly see the reality that most of the farmers in Abakundakawa are still in acute poverty.
